Il Caffè Centrale nasce a Caserta nel 1920 , quando i fratelli Vincenzo e Ciro Rigido aprono un Bar Pasticceria in via Cesare Battisti n° 5 , a due passi dalla Reggia.
Ciro si occupa della gestione del bar, Vincenzo della pasticceria; la sua specialità, “ Lo Spumone”, si vende nei giorni di festa e va a ruba durante le calde sere della festa di S. Anna, patrona della città.
Alla morte di Vincenzo, la proprietà del Caffè Centrale passa alla sorella Anna e, da questa, al nipote Alfredo.
Sono gli anni ’60. Alfredo accoglie gli amici che si incontrano al bar per bere una buona tazza di caffè, leggere il giornale commentando le ultime notizie di cronaca e di politica, giocare la schedina parlando di sport. I militari, dopo la libera uscita, arrivano a frotte, per passare il tempo e bere qualcosa mentre aspettano, con i gettoni in mano, che il telefono si liberi, per chiamare casa. I ragazzi, intanto, usciti da scuola, si ritrovano per la consueta partita di biliardo.
Dopo il terremoto del 1980, poiché i locali sono lesionati, Alfredo sposta la sede del Caffè in via Roma 34, dove continua l’attività con l’aiuto della moglie Maria Sofia.
Dal 1994 è Pietro, il figlio di Alfredo, a gestire la caffetteria, con energia e determinazione, facendo della cura del cliente il suo impegno più grande. Nel 2019, ha una nuova idea: aprire una piccola Torrefazione Artigianale, convinto che, scegliere le miscele e tostarle , con attenzione e professionalità, è un atto di amore verso il caffè e i suoi estimatori.
